“How Sensitive is Your Funny Bone?”

Hey Fish Fans,

We’ve been invited to participate in Langara College’s ongoing series of Philosophers’ Jams at 7 PM on Thursday, March 13. Come see us perform and then ask us questions, like “Why do you think you’re funny?” and “Why does Diana look taller on TV?”  Who knows, if this works out, we may abandon Sketch Comedy for Sketch Lecturing because there is nothing funnier than trying to explain jokes. Details below:

How Sensitive is Your Funny Bone?

Humour can be an effective way to highlight sensitive issues, address controversial topics, or provoke discussion. But because humour is subjective, how do we determine when something is funny or offensive? Are some topics off limits, and if yes, are we stifling “art” and censoring the “artists”? What role do context, audience and intention play? Local sketch comedy troupe, Assaulted Fish, will tell some jokes and try to explain themselves.

Assaulted Fish is one of Vancouver’s longest running sketch comedy acts. Since 2003, they have performed at numerous sold-out comedy festivals and cultural venues, including the CanWest Comedy Festival, SketchFest Seattle and most recently, the 2013 Vancouver Fringe Festival and Vancouver Sketch Comedy Festival 2014. Their tightly crafted sketches range from well-observed character studies to sharp commentary to surreal slapstick. Their short film, Dandy Lions, has been shown in at least two film festivals. Get to know them at www.assaultedfish.com.

* Please note that Brad O’Hara’s discussion about The Rationality of Advertising has been rescheduled to the fall.
